Note on Elite Teams
Elite Competition Routines:
At auditions, Elite dancers will indicate how many routines they would like to compete in for the upcoming school year.
Large Group Participation:
Large Group participation is an expected part of the Elite program and is considered a required routine. Rehearsals will be held on weekdays and may occasionally include weekend practices.
We understand that dancers have school, family, and other activity commitments, so if your dancer has a major ongoing conflict, please let us know as early as possible. We will review conflicts case‑by‑case and do our best to accommodate for those that truly cannot participate.
Solos, Duets, Trios & Small Groups (All Teams)
For Elite and all company teams, all requests for solos, duets, trios, and small groups must be submitted at auditions. This allows us to plan casting and choreography within the category and level limitations set by competitions. In addition, we must have all final routine requests confirmed no later than May 30 so we can complete competition registrations accurately.
Quick Expectations (All Companies & Teams)
1. Commitment
Please double-check all performances and major rehearsal dates before registering. Teammates rely on each other, absences can affect routine participation & casting.
2. Communication & Portal
Use the Student Portal under ‘Current Students’ on our site to register, update info, and check billing, receipts, payment methods, and history.
3. Tickets & Production Costs
Ticket minimums for RPAC shows help cover theater, staff, and production costs. Any extra tickets can be resold to SDM families.
4. Rehearsal Changes
Company/Team rehearsals may be canceled, adjusted, rescheduled or added. Added rehearsals will be communicated far in advanced.
5. Parent Presence at Events
A parent/guardian must attend conventions, performances, and competitions with their dancer. Staff are focused on running the event. Please be aware that competitions often also run up to 1 hour early therefore we ask dancers to arrive 1.5 hrs before group time.
6. Private Lessons and Extra Events
Optional 30 min recurring weekly privates cover technique (no routine attached) and some families use them for a class requirement. They may also be used for choreography. Deadlines: Aug. 1st for competition solos, duets or trios & by Oct. 1st for recital only solos, duets & trios.
7. Positive Culture
We encourage dancers to cheer each other on, even in competition. Please help us keep SDM positive by avoiding gossip and bringing any concerns directly to us. We’re proud of our dancers and families.
8. Level Placement (Performance Teams & Younger Ballet Companies)
Younger company classes sometimes have age overlaps. Teachers will assess fit in the first few weeks and may recommend a different level, day, or time to best support your dancer.
9. Travel & Hotels (Competition Focus Only)
Most events do not require hotels; however, many families enjoy staying near Anaheim/Disney for Showstoppers. We suggest booking 4–6 months ahead; it’s easier to release a room than to find one closer to the event.
10. SDM Jerseys
SDM jerseys are optional for most companies but mandatory for competition‑focus companies. Information and ordering details go out in August.
11. Additional Regional Competitions (including Ballet)
Dancers that have Solos Duet or Trios may join extra regional competitions (or Ballet ones like YAGP) and even including nationals) that are not attended by their group. Registration fees for these events are higher to cover teachers’ costs for registration, preparation, and attending. Teacher presence may also vary by event and their presence may also be pending.
