At Home Confidence Kit: 2½–3½ Year Olds

Confidence Kit:
2yr 9mo–3½ Year Olds

At this age, “success” in dance doesn’t look like perfect steps. It looks like tiny changes in how they move, listen, and join in. Here’s what our 2½–3½‑year‑olds are practicing all year:

Coordination & Movement

Little jumps with two feet
Stepping side‑to‑side
Stretching legs and pointing toes
Using props
Simple ballet, tap, and jazz steps like:
Point/Flex, First Position, Tip Toes, Toe drops, Shuffles to name a few
What you might notice at home:
More hopping, spinning, “showing you” their feet or toes, marching to music.

Listening & Thinking Skills

Following one‑step directions (“freeze,” “clap,” “jump”)
Repeating short, simple movement patterns
Matching movements to what they see or hear
Staying with one activity for a few minutes before switching
What you might notice at home:
They copy moves from class, remember “freeze,” or tell you “teacher said…”

Social & Emotional Skills

Getting comfortable in a group setting
Watching first, then joining in (this is normal)
Learning to wait their turn
Sharing space with other kids
Expressing themselves with their body (big arms, faces, etc.)
What you might notice at home:
Talking about “friends” in class, showing you “their spot,” using new feelings words.

Music & Creativity

Moving to different tempos and rhythms
Responding to clapping, stomping, or swaying
Pretending
What you might notice at home:
More dancing when music comes on, making up stories with movement, “putting on shows.”

My 30-Day Confidence Chart

Each time your child has one of these little ‘wins,’ add a sticker or checkmark. At the end of 30 days, celebrate how far they’ve come!

Walked toward the studio door (even if they needed your hand)
         Walked toward the classroom
Went into the classroom (even if they stayed just for a moment)
Stayed in the classroom (for longer 5 minute increments each time)
Followed a 1‑step direction (“freeze,” “hands on hips,” etc.)
Waited for their turn (even for a few seconds)
Smiled, laughed, or clapped during class
Showed you any move from class at home
Talked about class, teacher, or friends later

At the end of 30 days, point out 2–3 things they do now that they couldn’t or wouldn’t do on day 1. That’s what confidence looks like at this age.

Home Games

1. Clap–Jump–Freeze

Say: “When I clap, you JUMP. When I say FREEZE, you stop like a statue.”
Do a few rounds, then switch – let them be the teacher.
Builds: following 1‑step directions, listening, having fun with rules.

2. Copy‑Cat Feet

Stand facing each other.
You point your toes, tap your heels, or march in place.
They copy your “feet dance.”
Then switch and copy them.
Builds: leg coordination, attention, feeling proud of “teaching.”

3. Animal Parade

Call out: “Walk like a tiny mouse… now a big elephant… now a hopping bunny.”
Let them pick animals too.
Builds: imagination, movement variety, comfort being silly.

Parents Tips

  • It’s normal if they watch more than they join in at first – observing IS participation at this age.
  • Practice following one‑step directions at home (“clap,” “freeze,” “jump”) – this is exactly what we do in class.
  • Help them learn waiting their turn in small ways (waiting for a snack, toy, or swing).
  • Arrive a few minutes early so they can see the room and feel settled before music starts.
  • If emotions rise at the door, we’ll work together. Let the teacher try first, and know that some kids need more than one visit before they’re ready to go all the way in
  • Even if your child will be starting in a 2-3yr old class, participating in a few parent and me classes is a great transition!
