TUITION & ADDITIONAL FEES- GENERAL
Tuition on classes, and company can be found on our schedule, on our pdf schedule at the desk, or on-line, however due to our mulit-discount and how many company and or classes your student is taking it can vary. Families receive yearly breakdowns automatically on-line after registration. Even though there are many combinations of kinds of classes, we have come up with approximate expenses at the end of this doc per company.
SDM STUDENT WEB PORTAL – (For Billing Questions and More…)
Did you know that the link to the Student Portal is on our website (under ‘Current Students’) and that you can not only register for classes and update your contact info etc. but you also have access to a Billing link where you can view detailed Billing Info for all your classes, including your Dance Company payment receipts, update your Payment Methods, make and view payments and transaction history etc.
ALSO – you have updated access to a Documents link where you can access documents such as your Personal Dance Recital Info and your Pre-Registration Packet with your class recommended classes etc. We created this portal to help our students and families have the best and most transparent experience possible at our school so please utilize it! 🙂
PERFORMANCE FEES/ TICKET MINIMUMS
Note on Performance fee/ Ticket Minimum Our company shows have a ticket minimum that ranges from 8-15 tickets at $30 for our performance at Redondo Performing Arts Center in March. Every ticket sold goes toward the rental of the theater and staff of all kind needed for the weekend. This includes multiple lighting, sound engineers, stage managers, drop managers, many custodians, mandatory ushers for fire safety laws, SDM staff, SDM teachers, additional staff, our videographer, photographer, sets & drops needed, and rental fee minimums….the list goes on. As dancers grow older than their kinder years their audience members from family dwindle from a handful to a couple. We do not need a ticket minimum for our June company shows due to the fact that it is recital weekend for the entire studio and all families contribute to our usage of the Redondo Performing Arts Center. Please note that 100% of the tickets sold for our March company shows goes toward the production and staff of the show. Lastly, the ticket minimum will vary depending on total members in your company versus expenses. For example, last year we placed 10 for jazz co members which turned into 8 and ballet co was 15 due to a heavy set ballet. You can find each companies ticket minimum at the end of the document. We do not just need you to cover the ticket minimum but we would love your family to sell to our lobbies to promote and sell your tickets to our SDM families!
FLEXIBILITY
This paragraph is not about your dancers flexibility : ) but rather your families flexibility. Company rehearsals are different from dance classes. Company rehearsals may be canceled, shortened, lengthened, rescheduled, and there may be more than are initially scheduled. Each group is different. Please note, as classes and privates and rehearsals are refunded if they did not have a chance to meet and be rescheduled. Extra rehearsals will also be scheduled and billed if needed, however, this rarely happens and will be upon the groups request. We will publish our calendar with these extra rehearsals as soon as we have heard back of all confirmed dates starting in August.. Thank you.
PRIVATE LESSONS
Private instruction is a great way to accelerate your dancer’s skills, refine technique and work on a curriculum that is directly tailored to each dancer, however private lessons are not required. You may schedule a private for your dancer at any time throughout the year. Standing weekly privates may be scheduled to either work on technique or choreography. Students that have a weekly standing 30 min choreography privates scheduled by Oct. 1st may perform their solo over our recital weekend regardless whether they are involved in company or not. Technical privates that are sometimes used for class requirement substitutions and are reserved for technique will not be working on choreography nor be eligible to participate in our solo showcase. Privates that are focused on choreography for competition need to be registered by Aug.1st even if starting in the fall so we can register in time for competition season as they fill up by mid August. Dancers must be registered in a particular company in order to compete in competition. For example a dancer needs to be enrolled in ballet company if they will compete in solo, duet or trio ballet competitions, jazz competition company for solo, duet or trio jazz competitions and hip hop company for solo, duet or trio for hip hop competitions.
ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance at all rehearsals is crucial for the success of each individual dancer and for the company group as a whole. Private lessons may have to be scheduled for a missed rehearsal but does not replace the fact that not having a dancer there in his or her spot at rehearsal affects the performance of every other dancer that was at rehearsal on that day. We cannot stress enough that it impacts the whole group when one dancer misses rehearsal. If more than one dancer will be missing we would rather have a chance to reschedule rehearsal than have rehearsal. Please note that missing more than two rehearsals in the first half of the school year and again in the second half of the school year (only one for ballet company as there is only one quarter in 2025) will result in not competing with the routine or standing out in the choreography taught. There are no refunds for competitions if your dancer or group has missed too many rehearsals to compete. This includes all rehearsals, technique classes, private and semi-private lessons.
TIME
Parents, we ask that you pick up your dancer on time, especially after the last class of the evening so the teachers may leave. We also would like to remind you that your attendance is mandatory and our teachers are not responsible for your dancers at conventions, performances and competitions as they are coordinating many things. Competitions may run up to an hour early so please note that dancers need to be there 1.5 hrs before their group start time.
FOOD
Please note that dancers need light and healthy snacks (light snacks like grapes, crackers, water!) while at conventions, performances and competition! Please pack multiple snacks, this is an absolute must! We feel that there are never enough. A couple crackers and a little sip of water calms the nerves. Thank you!
CODE OF CONDUCT
SDM dance companies are inclusive and supportive experiences for ALL company dancers. Any and all inappropriate behavior may result in dance probation or decreased stage time. We understand that it may be odd to see dance class-mates “competing against” each other at competition. Please remind your dancers to support each other as they are all working on improving their own dance skills and own scores. Let’s remind them and all their cheerleaders to support them in performances, classes, rehearsals and all events. Also if there is anything we can help you with this year we ask you to bring it to our attention. We understand that in dance and sports discussions amongst parents may turn into unproductive gossip. As your soccer coaches will also agree, please keep the vibes “beachy” here in Hermosa Beach and refrain in trying to give each other info, even if it seems helpful in the moment. Come to us personally on how we can help you specifically. We are very proud of all of our dancers and SDM families this year and would like to remind everyone to continue the good job!
CONVENTIONS
A dance convention is typically a group of workshop classes that are taught by multiple teachers over a number of days. These workshops usually have industry teachers and a mix of many dance styles and skill levels. There are usually hundreds of dancers taking class in a large ballroom from a teacher on stage with a mic. There are many dancers taking class at the same time in a large ballroom. Students are separated strictly by age with a January 1st cut off. We will be participating in two conventions this year. NYCDA will be held in the LAX area,. It is highly recommended that those families participating in the convention near Anaheim stay at the recommended hotels near the dance convention over the weekend. Please be sure you’re sure you do want to participate because both conventions issue credit vouchers and not refunds after registration. Let us know if you have any questions about either convention we are going to. There is more information on each faculty on the conventions websites. Conventions also include all dance styles so if you are a hip hop focused student please note ballet and jazz will primarily be offered and if you are a ballet or jazz focused student, get ready to take tap (yes even if you don’t have shoes) and hip hop. We will need to know if you are planning to attend either of the two conventions we will be going to in the month of September.
NYCDA Convention Info – LAX area November – Groups Separated by age Jan 1 / Ages (5-7yrs/ 7-10yrs/11-12 yrs/ 13-15yrs/ 16-19yrs) We will publish rates mid Aug when we send you the company calendar of the school year, however, rates can vary from $250-$450.
HOTEL ROOMS NEEDED?
All conventions, competitions, and events are local and you don’t need a hotel room to stay over the weekend. However, many of us teachers grew up going to conventions and competitions and the hotel memories are ones that we will never forget. Showstoppers competition at Disneyland would be the weekends we would recommend getting a room due to the location of the Convention. Waiting until the competition or convention opens up their hotel block seldom works as they often sell out within minutes. We suggest you book your hotel rooms 4-6 months ahead of time and pay the normal rate for your stay.
REGISTRATION FEES & EXTRA COMPETITIONS
Sometimes there are dancers that would like to compete at a ballet focused competition or another regional competition that groups will not be going to compete at, this even includes nationals. These competition registration fees will be higher than the regular registration fees and will include all teachers’ expenses for the entirety of their stay and may be hundreds of dollars or more depending on how many dancers are splitting the cost. These will be paid after the competitions weekend. Note that your teacher may or may not be at the actual event depending on if there is already an SDM teacher present. Please also note that 100% of all registration fees go to the staff needed to register for the competitions and be present at the events or competitions.
COMPANY JERSEYS
Company Jerseys (or jackets) if you have them are to be worn at competition award ceremonies and are mandatory for all dance company dancers (optional for performance company dancers).
YOUNGER PERFORMANCE COMPANY PLACEMENT
Please note that there is an age overlap in the younger performance company classes. Even though there are age minimums, teachers may use the first few weeks of the school year to assess if the group your dancer is registered in is right for your dancer and the group. This is for all companies and all groups. We understand that there may be friends that would like to train together, however, no company rehearsals do not run like classes and your dancer may be asked to go up into a different level or down into a different level. Your dancer may also be asked to wait another year and train in classes instead of participating in a company class. Thank you ahead of time for understanding.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I MAY NEED TO KNOW
Is there anything else I may need to know? Please read all the paragraphs below to have a full view of a company dancer and their family’s commitment. and please email Michelle michelle@schoolofdanceandmusic.com if you have any other specific questions.
